(December 11, 2007) — “Yes! I got it, I got it!” yelled senior Alan Janoyan while running through the Burbank Marriott’s parking lot with the world’s biggest smile on his face. These cries of joy were due to Janoyan’s successful attempt of getting Gov. Mitt Romney to sign a poster. On Nov. 15, about 42 of government teacher Nick Doom’s AP Government students went on a field trip to witness Republican presidential candidate Romney promote his campaign. After arriving at the hotel, students congregated around the table set up outside of the conference room. Some asked for posters while trying to collect as many bumper stickers and pamphlets as they could. T he students who arrived early to the event got to choose the best seats in the house. The room was filled with camera people and others from all around, including Hoover High School students and former Clark Spanish teacher Anne Reinhard. The students anxiously waited for the governor to arrive, waiting while the lights dimmed, creating a dramatic effect. And at that moment, when Romney stepped into the room, Clark students gave a standing ovation, along with the rest of the crowd, and cheered excitedly. “Our future is even more promising than the glorious days of our past,” Romney said. Many times Romney referred to Ronald Reagan and maintained an optimistic approach. He also criticized the Democratic candidates and poked some fun at them by making quick witted, sarcastic comments. Janoyan said he wanted to hear Romney’s views on issues. “I like [Rudy] Giuliani, but now I’m torn because I liked Romney’s speech,” senior Andrea Peralta said. “I had a limited view on Mitt Romney , but now I have a better idea on who he is and what he represents,” senior Hayk Manukian said. “I thought he was very vague. He kept saying that we want a strong America but didn’t say how we’d get there,” senior David Mangikyan said. The students were able to take a quick group picture with Romney. Though Doom was disappointed that he wasn’t able to be in the group picture, the students couldn’t stop talking about how much fun they had on the field trip. “I’m so glad I was able to get a picture with him,” senior Cristina Olivares said.
