(February 21, 2008) — Clark’s newest club is reintroducing a popular childhood hobby: racing with remote controlled vehicles. Members of the Remote Control (RC) Club build remote control cars, helicopters, boats airplanes and amphibious vehicles to race them in tournaments against private competitors. One of their current projects is building airplanes to fly in a tournament on the Robin’s Hobbies Flying Field in Tujunga. They also learn how to control the vehicles, the parts, each component’s functions and how certain factors could affect the vehicle’s performance. One of these factors is frequencies. Since the vehicles are remote controlled, certain frequencies can cancel out the signals. Each member has his own area of expertise. Some members are good at building the vehicles while others are good at controlling them. Although each member brings his own remote controlled vehicle to work on, they all work together to purchase the supplies. Sophomore William Shaler and his friends who enjoyed playing with RC vehicles created RC Club. The club first started off as a hobby with unofficial meetings, then became a club when more people expressed interest. Since it is a new club, Shaler wants to get more people interested in joining it by putting on a demonstration with some of the vehicles; however this has not happened yet because of time issues. According to Shaler, RC Club is also currently male dominant and they are encouraging more females to join. “All girls are welcome,” Shaler said. “The more people we have the merrier.” RC Club meets Mondays and occasionally Tuesdays in Fred Blattner’s room.
