(February 21, 2008) — The Kids Against Tobacco Smoking Club has a lot planned for Saturday’s Clark Expo. KATS club members will be holding an exhibit in the library, where artwork will be on display demonstrating the harmful effects of smoking. KATS Club will also have informational pamphlets and display boards available to parents and students. They will be showing parents a slide show of what KATS is all about and a second-hand smoke flash animation. KATS advisor Judy Sanzo said she is hoping that she can get two lungs, one healthy and the other with emphysema, from the American Cancer Society to demonstrate the dangerous results of smoking. Clubs are not the only ones busy preparing for the Clark Expo. Teachers are also getting their classrooms ready. “We will be showing artwork created by students on the LCD projector,” teacher Alison Kuehn said. Kuehn and teacher William Saul are planning to represent their classrooms together at the Clark Expo this year, demonstrating what their students have accomplished throughout the year. “We tried it last year,” Kuehn said, “and it worked out really well.” P rincipal Doug Dall will give his orientation speech to incoming freshmen and their parents in the morning from 9:30 to 11 a.m., and then Clark’s Open House will continue until 1 p.m. “Originally, when we first tried it, we ran a test Expo and it was on a Saturday,” Assistant Principal Kristina Provost said. “Up until this point, there was no such thing as a Saturday open house.” When Clark first opened, Open House and the Clark Expo were two separate events; but when the school combined them for the first time in the year 2000, students, teachers and parents found it much more convenient. According to Provost, when Clark had its Open House on weekdays in the evenings, a majority of parents found it difficult to attend; it was dark and classrooms were not easy to locate. However, when the Clark staff tried combining the events and having them both on a Saturday, there was more parent and teacher participation than before. After that, Clark Expo and Open House were always held together on a Saturday. “It was a really good combination of what Clark had going, so you get a real feel of the culture at Clark,” Provost said. The Clark Expo also allows both students attending Clark and prospective freshmen to interact. “When a student is able to give a tour to an incoming student, it makes a huge impact on that family, because now they have a connection,” Provost said.
