(March 14, 2008) — Ah! It’s March—the dreadful month of March. The midnight of Nov. 29 doesn’t feel like too long ago when I said goodbye to college applications forever as I clicked the ‘submit’ button. And just when I thought it was all over…Bam! They’re back in my life. Once again, I have been finding myself rummaging through the mailbox as soon as I get home from school and constantly checking my email every 20 minutes. Sound familiar? I am pretty sure I am not the only one going through this. But come to think of it…so what if I don’t get into the college of my dreams? Does it really matter? I mean…sure, it would hurt to find out that I didn’t get into the college I have been eyeing. But from what I see, the whole point of going to a college is to live the American Dream. There are plenty of people out there that don’t necessarily graduate from Harvard and yet make a difference in the world. Take for instance, one of the richest men on Earth, Bill Gates. It’s cliché to use him as an example I know, but it is true that he did not need a Harvard degree to start Microsoft. Okay, I admit. Bill Gates is an anomaly—maybe one in a billion. But aside from Gates, there are many great doctors, teachers, lawyers and architects that we respect for who they are and the skills they offer. How many people actually care to find out where their dentist graduated from? As long as he can get the job done right, everyone is happy. In the long run, I don’t think that the prestige of colleges should matter all that much. So seniors, let’s not forget that life doesn’t end after your first rejection letter. There will always be a place out there that will gladly accept you for who you are. We only get to be seniors once, right? It’s time for us to enjoy the last few months of high school while it lasts. And for you sleep deprived underclassmen with 5 AP classes and SAT prep classes, go to sleep. Now!
