(March 14, 2008) — Plastic surgery is, in many people’s minds, a drastic solution, but for some people, it’s lost some severity. Celebrities like Joan Rivers, Victoria Beckham and Michael Jackson have crossed the line from believeable to scary. The most infamous of these three is Michael Jackson, who has transformed from a black pop superstar to a pasty skinned alien. While some pop stars own the fact that they have had numerous plastic surgeries, others deny the apparent changes. Jackson has claimed to have had only a few nose jobs to continue to be able to hit higher notes. Rivers, however, has not denied the fact that she regularly has plastic surgery. Most high school students are far from the same level as Michael Jackson or Joan Rivers. “I think innner beauty is much more inportant than what’s on the outside,” senior Syune Gevorgyan said. Gevorgyan has thought of nose surgery to repair her broken nose, but for the time being, Gevorgyan will keep it the same. “I would only want to have plastic surgery if it was a medical problem they were fixing,” Gevorgyan said. Cosmetic surgery can be a facelift or a simple mole removal and is not only used for purely selfish reasons. Some people who suffer from cleft palates need surgery in order to live “normal” lives. These clefts which form during gestation can be cured with surgery; with time the scars soon fade. Other people who have to have growths removed are saved by plastic sugeons. Cosmetic surgery is not only used to alter seemingly perfect people but to repair those who are believed to have valid imperfections. Senior Stella Bagdaserian has been considering going to a cosmetic surgeon to repair the large burn on her arm. “I’m only looking around, but it’s not a for sure thing,” Bagdesarian said. Bagdesarian has a positive self image which is influenced by her close friends. ” I think it makes her special,” said Bagdesarian’s close friend Alida Artinian. Other high school students have different ideas on how they want to look. An anonymous Clark student said that she wanted to have her breasts enlarged. “I don’t want huge Pamela Anderson ones, but I want to fit in with curvey girls,” she said. Like most surgeries, much can go wrong with plastic surgery. First, anesthesia can cause the airways to constrict. Other long term side effects include nerve damage or scarring. Either one can make most people reconsider what work they might want to eventually get done.
