Freedom: the illusion that is our world. Free to be a land of baggy-pants wearing, fishnet sporting and head-shaving Britney Spears wannabes. Yes that’s right! Our freedom, that people worked so hard to give us, is slowly being handed over by us. You know what I’m talking about. You sit there in your room and get upset because your latest idol just got kicked off for being misunderstood. Why are we so superficial and empty? I find myself not only unfulfilled but also unhappy; my entire life, I’ve been told to do this and do that to become a well-adjusted member of society. Society has altered my perception of the world so much I’m not sure what’s right or wrong. I’m done. Next year I’m not going to a four year college just because I’ve been told I need to. I’m going to design school and I’m going to follow my own dream. Just because my friends are going to be doctors, lawyers and accountants doesn’t mean I have to be. Let’s face it I’ve never been the most brilliant student and things like math and English I am hopeless at. You’re wondering, “Why should I care?” You should care because in the U.S., people have started to believe that you need to finish high school, go to college, get a job, then die. Well, I think that there should be more colleges for people to do different things to make them happy. Why do people say they want to be a doctor when they’re children but when they get their dream career they’re a plumber? The world should open its eyes to the possibility that the greatest jobs don’t pay you the highest salary. The world could be a better place if people actually did what made them happy and what they’re most passionate about. So I made the first step. I refuse to follow like some good zombie. I’m going to do what makes me happy and I don’t care if I never become as rich as my father as long as I can do what makes me happy. So what if I don’t move to Colorado and study biomedical sciences? I suck at biology; just ask Mrs. Benzer or Ms. Bye. I never wanted to leave LA and now I don’t have to, so…. LA, here I stay!
