(June 13, 2008 ) — “It was the coolest thing at Clark,” said senior Haik Manukian, referring to the annual Clark car show that got cancelled after the 2006 show. For seniors, the car show is a fading memory of students spending a relaxing enrichment in the field admiring the ordinary cars; yet many are not aware of why it was cancelled. Senior Ruben Rojas recalled that there were over 40 students in the club advised by math teacher Ellen Armitstead in 2006. However, after the car show in 2006, an executive decision was made to no longer hold a car show because of the actions of a few students. “The students posed danger to the safety of the neighborhood and to themselves,” Armitstead said. According to Armitstead, students were racing around the neighborhood and two students were stopped by the California Highway Patrol for racing on the 210 freeway. Rojas believes it was the right decision to cancel the show because the school should not promote racing. “I would have brought my car,” Manukian said, referring to his 2008 white Audi TT. Senior Haig Malkhasyan agreed that he too would have brought his cars: his 2003 Chevrolet Corvette and his 1987 BMW 325. However, there is still hope for students like Manukian and Malkhasyan. Former Clark students are currently presenting a plan to start an annual car show for Clark alumni, hoping that having more mature adults showing their cars will result in a safer event.
