Wow! The PTSA 2008 Reflections winners are in! But that’s not the only reason to say “Wow” this year. Every year the Glendale Unified School District participates in the National PTA Reflections Program. This competition is an arts recognition and achievement program created to help students express themselves and receive awards for their efforts. These entries are judged at a local unit and then go to council, district, state and national competitions. As for the theme, it is changed every year, and 2008 happened to be labeled with a very simple but defining “Wow.” Junior Jenny Oh entered a 17 by 14 inch black and white sketch of her vision of the future. She mentioned that her AP English teacher, Carol Pettegrew, was offering extra credit for any entries, and that pushed her to pull out her unfinished work and complete it in time for the deadline. “When I heard ‘Wow,’ that piece just came into my mind and I decided to finish it. I finished it the day before the deadline, so I thought I wouldn’t do good in the contest because I was rushing,” Oh said. Junior Lily Mkhitarian was pushed to enter by the same motivating extra credit. “Ms. Pettegrew told our class we would get extra credit if we sent in art work, or writing, or music or whatever the options were,” Mkhitarian said. According to her, the contest was never her main interest. “I didn’t even know about it. A contest is always interesting, but extra credit is always better,” she said. This year, two entries from Clark went to the district-level judging: these were first place art by Oh titled “Future” and first place music by junior Daniel Manasserian. The categories available this year were literature, art, music and photography. Clark winners will be honored at the Founder’s Day PTSA meeting on Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. Council winners will be honored on March 3 or 17 at the GUSD school board meeting. These winners will receive a medallion, certificate, photos and cookies. The awards ceremony will be showing on Charter Cable, channel 15. If interested in viewing, all work will be going on display at 223 N. Jackson St. at the GUSD’s lobby between Feb. 17 and March 20.
