In the United States we have the freedom of expression, but apparently in Russia they don’t. Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights declares “the right to hold opinions without interference.” So that does not give Russia the right to ban “emo.” “Emo” is short for “emotional” which is a sub-genre of punk rock. Usually “emo’s” are categorized as people who completely dressed in black, and wear their hair so it covers most of their face. The politicians at thre Russian legislation were quoted as saying “emo” music is a “dangerous teen trend:, a “social danger”, and a “threat to national stability”. At a State Durma meeting, it was discussed that the state of being “emo” glorifies being anti-social and commiting suicide. These comments have spawned many rivals and protestors. It was reported on NME.com that Dmitry Gilevich of Russian “emo” band MAIO, stepped up and said, “Expressing psychological emotions is not forbidden by law.” When asked her ideas on the topic, sophomore Annie Grigoryan she had no problem sharing her thoughts. She had heard about this topic and was very upset. “emo” kids aren’t suicidal, mentally disordered, NO, they are more than that.”, said Grigoryan. For those like Annie Grigoryan who care about the “emo” genre, “emo” is to remain illegal.
