‘Deadpool’ trailer has fans buzzing

Deadpool is without a doubt one of the biggest modern cultural icons. Even people who don’t have any interest in comics know about the merc-with-a-mouth and can’t get enough of his raunchy, ridiculous antics. Though he is an immensely difficult character to adapt to film, first time director Tim Miller appears to be making the most honest, accurate depiction of the titular character in the first trailer for 20th Century Fox’s Deadpool.

Ryan Reynolds stars as ex-special forces soldier Wade Wilson, who is diagnosed with a deadly cancer and is facing the verge of death. But when a mysterious organization claims that they can cure him of his disease, Wilson finds himself getting more than he bargained for. After a series of experiments, Wilson develops the modified healing abilities, similarly to Wolverine and uses his powers not to fight crime as one would think, but really to just mess with people and murder them in truly glorious fashion.

Not much of the plot is revealed here, but the trailer still offers plenty to enjoy. For one, the humor is top-notch, as Deadpool breaks the fourth wall, the way he traditionally does in the comics, mocking the fact that he’s in a movie. There’s also a bit of meta comedy thrown in when Wilson begs that his supersuit not be made “green or animated,” as Reynolds throws insults at the despicable costume he sported in Green Lantern (2011), which he has publicly stated he was not fond of making. Hopefully this will be a better comic book film than that monstrosity.

There’s also some incredibly staged action sequences that are, in their true form, gory, insane and just pure awesome. The scene towards the end of the trailer in which Deadpool does a 720 barrel role and takes out three goons while “X Gon Give it to Ya” plays in the background is nothing short of perfect. This green band trailer, which still has a bit of risque content, censors all of the profanity and bloody violence that the film will ultimately have, so in order to experience the uncut rambunctiousness of Deadpool, watching the red band trailer would be advised. Viewer discretion advised, obviously.

Deadpool has certainly made a great first impression with fans of the character, as it seems that the people who made it are true fans themselves. However, hopes should be limited, as we’ve seen what Fox does with first time directors of big-budget films with Josh Trank and Fantastic Four (more on the topic can be read here). So while the film has shown great promise with its first trailer, a lot can still happen between now and its Feb. 12, 2016 release date.
