On May 1, 2023, the 2023 Met Gala was the top trending event around popular social media platforms like Tiktok and Instagram. Almost everyone saw clips and pictures on their feed of their favorite celebrities and actors in designer fashion honoring the legacy of Karl Lagerfield, a late Chanel designer, whom the 2023 Met took as a theme. 

The Met Gala is a fundraising event in New York that features different celebrities dressed in unique fashions. This year, celebrities came dressed in the theme of Lagerfield’s designs, in mostly white, black, and even some as Lagerfeld´s beloved cat, Choupette. 

Each year shows off the luxurious fashion trends Fashion changes throughout the years, and so the museum keeps all the outfits worn to the met. Not only does fashion change, but also the most popular artists, actors, and celebrities of the year show up to the gala. Some of the most popular celebrities that went to the gala include Doja Cat, Jared Leto, Lil Nas X, and Kim Kardashian. Viewers often post themselves ranking the celebrity outfits and showing off pictures of some of their favorite outfits. 

Every year, the meet sparks some controversy in viewers. There won’t always be people that agree with people’s interpretations of the theme but most teens and Gen Z adults enjoy watching their favorite celebrities make their appearance. All of this comes to a good cause. All the money raised through tickets and table reservations goes to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute for next year’s Met. News reporters and pictures also gain revenue from the viewers. 

So, what is fashion? Fashion is different for everyone. Fashion is not about wearing what’s trending, but rather the feeling of wearing something different and unique to oneself. Fashion is about one’s own sense of style. Using the met as an example, it sets up expectations and styles people do not usually wear in everyday life. Everyone has a sense of style. 

For those pursuing fashion, every year´s gala gives a good idea of what is trending. Overall the 2023 Met Gala was a success and brought out some of the best fashion of the year. The 2024 Met Gala will take place on Monday, May 6th, 2024.
