America plans to re-open borders with Cuba
In 1961, the United States decided to isolate the country of Cuba in order to protest their Communist regime. All relations and trade with the country were cut off. However, in the past few months there have been efforts to recreate relations between the two countries by opening the borders and trade.
President Obama has occasionally visited the country and met with their president, Raul Castro, in order to normalize relations. The president has even taken action to take Cuba off of the U.S. List of Terror (the United States list of terrorist countries).
Recently, it has also become much easier for Americans to travel to the country. People can book a flight using CheapAir.com, and there are rumors that a ferry will start traveling between Miami and Havana bay.
Even Conan O’Brien, host of his own late night television show, visited the country for a special episode of his show.
Many people believe that opening borders with the country will be very beneficial both politically and economically.
The American government isolated Cuba as a response to their communist government (which America did not agree with). They were isolated as the U.S. has been doing with most communist countries since the Cold War.
So far, the method has not worked on changing the regime of the country. However, if borders open with the country and relations improve, the people may be inclined to see how beneficial a democratic government could be
However, with changing relations and opening of borders, the economy of the third world country will greatly improve. Not only will an increased amount of trade help change the economy, but an increase in tourism will too. A Chinese firm has even begun building a golf course in anticipation of the increase in tourism.
Americans have taken actions to increase tourism in Cuba. You can now book a room on the island using airbnb.com and find a flight using CheapAir.com. There is even a ferry that is set to open in the fall that will link Miami to the Bay of Havana.
Americans should take the opportunity to visit this beautiful country. Not only will they be able to experience its rich culture, but mingling with the locals, and contributing to this country’s economy could help the Cubans realize that democracy is a beneficial form of government.
