“Meninist” account on Twitter gets popular
“I don’t think feminism, as I understand the definition, implies the rejection of maternal values, nurturing children, caring about the men in your life. That is just nonsense to me” — Hillary Clinton
Feminism has become a worldwide concern, controversy, and viewed by some as “seeking for attention.” As we know, feminism is no laughing matter, because according to the organization Rape, Abuse, Incest, National Network (RAINN), 237,868 victims (age 12 or older) get raped each year.
But, what about men? According to RAINN In 2003, 1 in every ten rape victims were male and 2.78 million men in the U.S. have been victims of sexual assault or rape.
Recently, on Twitter a meninist account had been made. Some individuals portray the meninist account as a joke or a mock of feminism, yet others agree on the fact that male victims of rape need to be acknowledged just as female rape. The account @TheMeninist does poke fun at strong feminist and mocks female perceptions. “Why can’t the woman go sleep on the couch after an argument?” was one of the tweets from the account.
Although some find the account amusing, I personally find it mocking women and their fight to end rape culture; however, I do believe that men should have equal rights, but I do not agree with what the Twitter page puts up as intended jokes and making fun of feminism. Men should definitely spread their thoughts on rape and sexual assault that sometimes are never reported.
Meninist is a serious concern and the Twitter account could have approached the subject differently. After all, we live in a free country with the right to freedom of speech and men could start a movement, spread the serious factual evidence and their point of view. I would approach the subject by listing facts about men’s rape and making people aware of the hardships men face; I would not take the comical approach this particular Twitter account chose to do.
Men are also victims of rape, they have equal rights in society, and if they want to start a serious and approachable meninist movement without poking fun at feminism, they can by all means do so.
Men should not have a separate “Meninist” account. Instead of mocking feminism they should stand by women. If they want to have legitimate awareness about men getting raped and sexually abused, they should come together with women and not have an account against them — they could join sides and protest together. That is the real equality — coming together, not mocking one another.
