Racist Clipper’s owner rightly fined for comments
LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling finally received his just punishment for his racial comments that he made over the phone to his girlfriend. According to ESPN LA, Sterling was fined $2.5 million dollars for his comments and received a lifetime ban from the NBA from the new NBA commissioner, Adam Silver. Some people think that this is too big of a punishment for some racist comments, but we live in a society that is trying to have an open mind and heart towards everyone and this is just holding us back.
His disturbing racial comments were the cause of his girlfriend, V Stiviano’s, harmless picture she took with Magic Johnson. Sterling was angered by the picture that was posted on Instagram by his girlfriend and called her to voice his opinion on the matter. He told Stiviano, who is half African American and half Latina, that he did not like how she associated with African Americans in public. This was especially wrong because he basically told his girlfriend that he only accepts half of her when he should accept all of her.
People reacted furiously toward Sterling and thinks he deserves this punishment for his racial comments. Even some celebrities have gone out of their way to express their frustration towards the Clipper’s owner including Lil’ Wayne and Snoop Dogg. Fourteen out of the 15 team members are African American and they all wore their gear inside out with black socks on April 26 during their fourth game in the playoffs to show that they do no not support Sterling’s actions. It would have been easy for the team to continue playing in their normal uniforms and pretend as if the comments did not affect them, but they had enough pride themselves to stand up against Sterling.
The team members do not even respect Sterling enough to wear their gear properly, so there is no point in Sterling staying as owner. The best thing for the team is to get a new coach that the team respects. There is no room for racism in a sport that is known for its racial diversity. If this continues, society will go back to its judgmental mindset.
The future for the Clipper’s seems unclear at the moment, but they are better off without Sterling, however they end up. Society can not afford to take a step backwards due to ignorant, racist comments.
