As Halloween approaches, students at Clark lined up eagerly to participate in the first food fundraiser of the school year: the annual Clarktoberfest! Far from its German origins, the items sold distinctly reflect the student body, with items such as lamajun and ponchik, along with nachos and shaved ice, attracting long lines and much approval.
Both ASB and various clubs were in charge of selling food, which included new items as well, such as waffle fries, boba, and food from the 85°C Bakery Cafe in Glendale. These differences from last year allowed some upperclassmen to reflect on the past years. “I think this was a great Clarktoberfest, especially considering that this was my last one. I feel much more connected to the school compared to when I was a freshman,” senior Milly Ontiveros said.
For people across grade levels, the event was an excellent way to connect with friends, allowing people to leave class early and to socialize. For the freshmen in particular, the event made a considerable first impression. “This is my very first Oktoberfest, and it’s going very great. My favorite part is watching people sell the food, and I’d like to give the people of ASB credit for their amazing work,” freshman Marci Ruiz said.
This fun opportunity for friendship, thankfully, wasn’t just reserved for the buyers. “This is our club’s first time fundraising,” junior Sophia Chen-Mesaros, president of the Trivia Club said, “and it’s also great to have friends working with you so you don’t feel like you’re missing out on valuable memories.” She went on to explain how it proved to be not difficult to sell out.
When the bell marking the end of school rang, hordes of students swarmed to the buses as they finished their food and said goodbye to their friends. This certainly marked a strong end to the week, as excitement builds for Halloween.
