The first few weeks of high school can be really daunting for 9th graders, especially at Clark, where students are coming from all four middle schools, and some even from private schools. It is often the case that there are 9th graders who don’t really know many people at the start of high school. The 9th-grade pancake breakfast is a cool icebreaker that the ASB plans for the incoming students to get excused from their period 1 class and enjoy pancakes and the company of their peers.
The 10th-12th grade ASB students help set up the event, as well as serve the freshmen. “Getting to pass out the toppings during the breakfast was really fun, since I was also able to talk with my friends while I passed out the chocolate chips. It was nice to see them enjoying their time,” junior Tamar Zakko said. Many teachers and staff were also supporting the event, some managing the lines and some walking around getting to know students. Vice Principals, Mrs. Fox and Dr. Hairapetian worked together at the griddle quickly making over 700 pancakes for all the freshmen.
Managing the line was a bit stressful because despite starting to cook the pancakes early, at one point, students were waiting for quite a while to get their pancakes. Even then, no one seemed to be complaining since the alternative was being in class instead of hanging out with their friends.
Many freshmen quickly lined up for seconds just after their first plate. With the combination of sausages, syrup, strawberries, and whipped cream, who could possibly refuse? “I had the most fun at breakfast when me and my friends ate our pancakes together and we had a longer snack period,” freshman Ani Kotanjian said.
In addition to the breakfast and laughter, the pancake breakfast gave freshmen a chance to meet new classmates and connect with other students. Many teachers and staff stopped by as well, creating a welcoming environment for the students. The event wasn’t just about the pancakes– it was about building community and making sure every new student felt welcomed.
Freshman Pancake Breakfast has been a long-lasting tradition at Clark, reminding students that while academics are important, so is the feeling of unity. By starting the year off with such a lighthearted and inclusive activity, the school sets the tone for a year full of support, encouragement, and shared experiences.
