Clark ASB has set up another event, adding to the other events for October: the Chess tournament. Students were given the chance to participate in the chess tournament, and they were all ready to showcase their abilities, unafraid to face the mental challenges ahead.
Lilit Karapetyan, the ASB vice president, planned to host this tournament on October 25th for two weeks. This was set up for chess club members and students who are up to the challenge to unite the students and cultivate their spirits. Students were given the chance to display their strategic planning and critical skills.
Gathered up in the Quad, each chessboard was occupied by two people ready to battle. Competitors think ahead, planning their moves and strategies to do well to ensure that they are successful. Various moves come into play in the game, including moves like trapping powerful bishops and transforming pawns into queens. Players switch up their tactics, prioritizing the safety of certain pieces on the chessboard at the expense of others. The air is tense with excitement and anticipation as spectators look out for any unexpected play that may occur.
Juniors Eduard Tunyan and Eric Galoustian, were excited to host this event this year, but ASB decided that moving forward, the Chess Club at Clark will take the lead on future tournaments The goal of this event was to boost the spirit of the game and this club in the school and also inspire the Chess Club to organize more tournaments like this. “The chess tournament was an overall success. It wasn’t a big event, but students got involved and had fun,” Karapetyan said.
As the chess tournament reached its final matches, participants continued to show their commitment even after playing many games. “As the chess game was ending, my mind was busy thinking about the moves. The clock ticking reminded me that time was running out,” Grigori Dagbaghyan said. “Even though I was about to lose, the game tested my determination and skills. Surprisingly, I was able to clutch a win because of the work of my rook and queen.”
After wrapping up a series of intense battles and strategic plays, the chess tournament concluded with junior Hrach Mutafyan being crowned winner of the tournament. With each unique play and close call, the students reflect on their mistakes and learn to never give up, no matter the challenges.
