Car enthusiasts and California Highway Patrol officers drove through the streets of La Crescenta in commemoration of the 9/11 terror attacks on Friday morning.

After Principal Doug Dall announced the Patriot Day car show, hundreds of students were lined up on New York Avenue. As Chryslers and hot rods drove past, many students cheered while others stayed silent.

Some students, such as junior Deroo Vasghanian, enjoyed the show. “It was fabulous,” Vasghanian said. “I loved seeing all the cars.” Sophomore Erika Hookasian shared a similar opinion, adding that it was “a great way to honor the tragedy.”

Other students thought that commemorating Sept. 11 attacks with a car show was inappropriate. “I think that it wasn’t appropriate for us because they pulled us out of class,” said senior Mika Stanghill. “The only hint of 9/11 [during the car show] were the little pieces of paper that were taped to the side of the cars. If it’s a commemoration for 9/11, it isn’t cars — it’s a social implication. It’s remembering people who died and I don’t think that anyone was thinking of the people who have given their lives.”

This is the third year that La Cañada Early Rodders conducted a car show on Patriot Day. This year’s parade had an addition of 20 more cars and a team of California Highway Patrol vehicles.
