Glendale High dominates Hoover at homecoming game
Students from Hoover and Glendale high schools prepared for the annual homecoming football game this past Friday throughout the week with spirit week, pep rallies, and pranks on opposing schools. Spirit week at both schools included more unconventional themes like Cowboy Day and God and Goddesses Day. Glendale High’s rally was The Incredibles themed and included a balloon drop, while students at Hoover put on skits for school spirit and gathered in the quad to drop posters made every class.
When big game day finally came around on Nov. 7, chickens roamed the quad of Glendale High for zero period students to find and janitors to attempt to capture.
Crowds on both sides were eager for the game to begin, although it was preluded by a performance by the marching band and a homecoming nominee parade. By the end of the second quarter, senior Luis Ruiz made a three-yard touchdown, scoring the first points for the Nitros in what would be a 19–0 victory.
Glendale scored another twelve points in the second half, despite Hoover sophomore Ryan Williams coming just two yards short of a touchdown.
Several Clark students played in the game, including sophomore Erik Sargsyan and senior Larny Lopez for Glendale High and seniors Aram Grigorian and Minas Berberian for Hoover.
“The best part of the game was when the referee blew the whistle, starting the game,” Lopez said. “We knew that it was our last high school football game and we had to enjoy every single moment of it.”
Besides playing in the game, other Clark students attended and showed support for their home schools. “The game was a lot more lively than last year,” said junior Jessica Sahakian. “There was more people and more spirit.”
