Chaos Overtakes Catalina
Class of 2015 causes trouble on their senior trip
Clark Magnet High School’s Class of 2015 made a mark on their Catalina Island class trip on Sept. 20, not just as the largest class to ever attend, but also for getting into a great deal of trouble. The day started with the students filling up all the seats on the outdoor top deck of the boat, leaving all the other passengers standing for the hour-long ride to the island. Once the students finally arrived, they were set free for the next six hours to roam the island,
Some students decided to go snorkeling in order to enjoy a leisurely swim with the underwater animals in their habitat. They were able to buy fish food for snorkeling in order to connect with the sea creatures. However, one student, Patrick Tumbucon, was in for a harsh surprise when he took part in this activity. “They bit me!” he said. “A bunch of the fish just attacked the hand I was holding the food in and they left bite marks!”
Tumbucon wasn’t the only person who was treated unfairly by the nature of the island. Students who rented bicycles had to use all their strength and energy in order to push themselves up the island’s hills. “My legs hurt,” said Alexis Artounian. “We went up a hill. I’m dead.” Although students tired themselves out, they still had a lot of fun riding through the city.
Students were also given tickets to play a round of mini golf. Joshua Valerio took the opportunity and said he had a great time doing so. After eating at the Avalon Grille, waiting an hour for “barely adequate” food (steak-fish sandwich), he and his friends had enough energy to go golfing in the scorching heat.
They even found a cat blocking the tenth hole, not a decoration to make the game more difficult, but a real live cat. “Despite losing several balls, we finally got to the eighteenth hole, but skipped it when we realized it took your ball away, and went to go play a second round,” Valerio said. “After the second round we returned the balls, clubs and time card just to be disappointed that the rumor of free ice cream when turning in a time card was untrue. But we still had a lot of fun.”
Kayaking seemed to cause the most trouble among the students, some accidental, and some self inflicted. One of the students who went kayaking was Lualua Shamim. She and her friend Bianca Lopez had rented a double kayak, and were paddling through the water as photography teacher Gregory Zamlich attempted to take pictures. All of a sudden, a wave came and pushed the kayak on top of two rocks where Shamim and Lopez got stuck.
“A crowd had gathered around and our friends were all laughing at us,” Shamim said. “Mr. Zamlich eventually jumped down on the dangerous rocks and pushed us off back into the water. We got really wet.” One of the passing observers, Paul Terzian, even called Zamlich a hero.
The damsels in distress weren’t the only people who made a lifelong memory kayaking. Artin Martirosyan and his friends all rented kayaks and threw around a football as they paddled around. At one point, they accidently threw the football onto a man’s boat. Martirosyan’s friend Antranik Dajadian tried to jump onto the boat in order to retrieve the ball, but not before the owner of the boat came out to scold them.
“‘How would you like it if I come and ******* key your car’ he really said that to us,” Erik Abramian said. “He then picked up the football and threw it as hard as he could, which was not very far.” The man then walked angrily back inside his boat as the group of friends laughed and paddled away.
Although the island provided many students with a great deal of adventures, a lot of the other students were still able to have fun. Mary Rshtouni said that she and her friends all used their free arcade tokens on the Wheel of Fortune game, winning over 600 tickets. She and her friends all got matching ninja cups. Anais Panossian went parasailing with her friend Ani Orujuan and they felt like they were on top of the world. “I wish I could do it again for a longer period of time,” she said.
