(May 2, 2013) — Running since the age of six, sophomore Leana Setian is a part of Glendale High School’s track and cross country teams. Her fastest mile time is 5:10. For cross country, which is a three-mile run, her fastest time is 18:03. Setian said that she broke many Glendale cross country school records from 1997. She said that her favorite part of track and cross country are the competitions and seeing new competition. Before each competition she blocks out everything and concentrates on finding a strategy. “You have to keep a clear mind and stay relaxed,” Setian said. But running isn’t the only sport Setian enjoys. From time to time she likes surfing and swimming. She also coaches the Los Angeles Falcons Track Team, which has kids from ages six to 17. Setian ran for this team for seven years prior to joining the GHS team. She specifically coaches the distance crew of the team. “They’re all great people and it’s really fun working with everyone there,” she said. Setian also said that it is fun to give back to the team that helped her get to where she is now. Even though she is the one coaching, she still learns from them. “It’s fun seeing them progress. You never know; one of them could be the next gold winning Olympian.”
