Intramurals take Clark by storm

(May 2, 2013) — The loud buzzer sounded in the gym on April 25, indicating halftime during the final game of Clark’s Basketball Intramural season. A crowd of about 25 students were watching the game.

At halftime, the same crowd was invited to try and take shots from the half court line to see who could make a basket. The two teams playing in the final took a break during the shootout, and when the second half started, Arizona gained a significant lead over Michigan, ending the game with a score of 21–6.

There were a total of ten teams playing in Division One. Each team consisted of three players and one substitute, with four players in total. Two of the teams playing, Michigan and Arizona, made it to the finals.

Arizona consisted of juniors Nick Eguizarian, Sarkis Katourjian, Kevin Arotunyan and Gary Kirakosian. Michigan consisted of juniors Nerses Karadolian, Shant Oganesian, Artem Boyadjyan and Simon Alparaz. Junior Daniel Shahgaldians, part of seventh period Sports Tech, saw the intramural process from the beginning.

“Most of the teams showed up the first day to start playing against other teams, but some of the guys on those teams also play against each other during lunch. The opportunity to play in a more official setting gave them the chance to see who the best teams were,” Shahgaldians said. “Now it’s down to two teams, Arizona and Michigan, who are playing in the finals.” The final between Arizona and Michigan began approximately five minutes after enrichment began.

The first half lasted ten minutes; Arizona won in the end. Junior Gary Kirakosian described the process of how the team started and advanced to the finals. “I heard about basketball signups about a week before spring break. Nick, Kevin, Sarkis and I signed up together. About three weeks after spring break, we started to play against other teams,” Kirakosian said.
