(April 2, 2013) — On March 9, senior Anahit Kardzhyan debuted Clark students’ art at the Flower Pepper Art Gallery in Old Town Pasadena as her senior project. Kardzhyan displayed the artwork of seniors Aren Sarkisian, Anahit Sahakyan, Manifa Simonyan and Madeline Sy, all of whom will have their work on display (and for sale) through April 9. Kardzhyan put up flyers all throughout the school to get the word out about her opening. She also used social media networks like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to get students to submit their own work. “We wanted to get the work of teenagers out into the public and get them noticed,” Kardzhyan said. Sy put up twelve pieces of her own work in the art gallery, each of which took about an hour to make; however, the framing was the more difficult part of the art work. “Half of the art is in the framing,” Sy said. “The framing is how you present whatever the art is. It’s almost like gift wrapping. If you have a really awesome gift but you wrap it in newspaper, it’s not going to look that great.” Sarkisian put up three of his own street art pieces in the gallery which each took three to four days to make. He was able to go to the art show and watch people look at his art. “It felt nice to have someone recognize my talent,” Sarkisian said. However, the art that is displayed wasn’t just for the viewing pleasure. The students were also given the opportunity to price and sell their work. Forty-five percent of the sale goes to the gallery, another 45 percent goes to the student, and the remaining 10 percent goes to curator/teacher Kelly Brinker. Unfortunately, as of presstime, none of the art work that is up in the gallery has been sold yet. “I don’t have high hopes for any of my art to sell, but if they do that would be amazing,” Sarkisian said.
