(Nov. 22, 2011) — I can say for certain that I did not expect this movie to turn out the way it did at all! I went into Twilight: Breaking Dawn expecting the typical romance associated with the series, some decent action scenes, and a few nice camera shots. What I got instead was a horribly depressing storyline, near-to-no action at all and an overwhelming feeling of disgust as I walked out of the theatre. Breaking Dawn continues right where the previous film leaves off, having Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner return to play their iconic roles of Bella Swan, Edward Cullen and Jacob Black, respectively. The film opens with Bella’s and Edward’s wedding, then transitions to their honeymoon, then finally back to their hometown of Forks when things don’t go necessarily as they had planned. Story aside, what makes the first three movies in the Twilight saga interesting is that they are serious, yet retain a certain feeling of fantasy and charm. They have some really cool action scenes, some nice funny moments and a fairly tolerable romance, which makes the films enjoyable to audiences who are not necessarily fans of the book series. This film, on the other hand, is nothing like any of its predecessors, in that I can think of no one other than die-hard fans of the series finding much to enjoy from watching it. The overall story in the beginning is nice, if not a little boring and slow paced at times, but after a certain point in the movie everything takes a turn for the worse. By worse, I mean disturbing and depressingly horrifying at times. I, as well as my friends around me, were genuinely bothered by some scenes, especially towards the end of the movie. That being said, I really don’t think this movie should have been granted a PG-13 rating, especially because many fans of the series are much younger than 13! This film, in my opinion, might as well have left in the censored explicit scenes and instead been released as a rated R movie. I think it would have been a much more successful film had it gone that route, because frankly it was much more geared towards an adult audience than any of the Twilight films that came before. This is not a movie I would recommend to anyone who is not a devout fan of the series. It’s full of filler scenes to make it longer, it’s disturbing when it’s not boring and serious make-out action is the only sort of action you’ll be getting.
