(May 24, 2011) — “I was very anxious, ” said freshman Saikiran Ramanan. “All the knowledge that we had accumulated the past couple of months was going to be tested.” He and the other members of the Clark Magnet JV Scholastic Bowl Team gathered in the Glendale High School library April 12 to compete in the annual GUSD-held competition. Crescenta Valley, Glendale High, Hoover and Clark all sent teams to the event. After the 50-question competition, Clark finished in first place, beating Glendale High by four points. The five member team — freshman Saikiran Ramanan, sophomores Madeline Sy and Kyle Bogosian, junior Anoush Djrbashian and senior Abu Saleh Imtiyaj — met on a daily basis at lunch to practice for the much anticipated competition. Though behind at the end of the first round of questions, the team persevered and managed to create a large lead by the end of the second round. In return for their victory, they were honored and received a certificate from the Glendale Board of Education. Team coach Susan Newcomer said that she has already begun planning for next year’s competition and thinking of new ways to allow the members to practice. “I’m planning on adding in some online trivia games to make it more fun,” Newcomer said. She is currently searching for members for next year’s team and feels good about their chances next year. “I’m trying people out with sample questions,” said Newcomer. “We have some very talented people in our freshman and sophomore classes.”
