(January 27, 2006) — Not exactly the most revolutionary tablet PC out today, the OQO “model 01+” does boast an amazing array of features. For one thing, this little device measures a little less than 5×3.5×1 inches, meaning it’s a bit smaller than half the size of a DVD case. But it can still fit in your pocket, depending on how big your pocket is. It sports a 30 gig hard drive, half a gig of RAM and weighs just a little under a pound. The OQO is a fully functional Windows XP computer and is WiFi and Bluetooth enabled. Like a laptop, you can connect all other peripherals such as keyboards, optical devices, monitors and other USB devices. With it being a tablet PC, there is a pen-based digitizer on the screen, but a TrakStick is on the keyboard available for those who prefer an old-school style of moving around the PC. Because it runs on XP, it runs almost all programs on this somewhat versatile tablet. Though this tablet may seem like it’s a dream come true, so far the majority of the reviews for the “Model 01+” has been nothing but critical. One common complaint about it is the fact that the battery dies out so easily. Two hours is the average battery life in reviews done so far, and even though it runs on XP, the performance overall when running certain applications is sluggish. Strangely enough, OQO decided to use USB 1.1 and BlueTooth v1.1 when newer versions of these utilities are already available. Obviously this little gadget costs a ton. Retail price is around $2000, but depending on where you buy it you can get it for a little less. Overall, the Model 01+ is an all right tablet PC. It can run most applications since it runs on XP and is already wirelessly enabled so surfing the web and playing your favorite games can be accomplished. If you are one of those who are really meticulous and exact about your hand held PC’s, this isn’t the right device for you. For those who are really humble, however, this is a perfect gadget simply because it has almost everything: you can listen to your favorite tunes, watch your movies, surf the net, IM and do so much more in the palm of your hands. Really, the only thing missing is a built-in phone and camera and it’s all set. Regardless, though, the OQO won’t necessarily catch on and gain that much popularity as the Palm Treo or Sony TR2. Its versatility is not enough to combat the fact that it only has a two-hour battery life and that it has sluggish performance.
