Umai: Montrose Shopping Park hidden jewel
Umai, which means that “something tastes good or is delicious,” is a Japanese dish that contains of rice, meat and vegetables. The little restaurant that serves this Japanese cuisine is located on 2268 Honolulu Avenue in Montrose.
Umai has a very small storefront that cannot easily be noticed by those who visit the Montrose Shopping Park. Making up for the storefront and the cramped seats, the family-run business maintains a great client base. With amazing bowls, the customers keep returning and become part of the family.
When customers walk into Umai, they are greeted by a mother, father and son. Their huge smiles make the customers feel welcome and comfortable. Their teriyaki bowls are simple and delicious.
The family follows a pretty simple menu with a variety of bowls. When building your bowl you can choose from a chicken bowl, a combo bowl (chicken and beef), beef bowl, salmon bowl or a veggie bowl. The prices range from $3.99 to $5.99 with an addition of 50 cents for vegetables.
The pickled celery is another staple at Umai, made from a family recipe. One customer even asked if he could buy a whole jar to take home!
Umai bowls, salads and plates remain a customer favorite as generations visiting the Montrose Shopping Park make frequent visits to the affordable restaurant.
When in need of a fast meal, I make a stop at Umai where I am welcomed with warm smiles and amazingly delicious food.
