T’Challa also known as Black Panther

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) unsurprisingly once again rocked the world with its new franchise Black Panther. Ever since the release of Captain America: Civil War in 2016 where Black Panther made his debut, fans of the MCU have been anxiously waiting to see the King of Wakanda make his second appearance on the big screen.

Black Panther is distinguishable in that it is thought-provoking and indisputably one of the best for the reason that it is a very important and unforgettable moment for many people. And thanks to the film director, Ryan Coogler, Black Panther is a success in the box office that will, in no question, go down in film history.

Following the death of King T’Chaka (John Kani) in Captain America: Civil War, T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) now has to take on the mantle to become the Black Panther, a role given to the crowned King of Wakanda which is a fictional East African nation. However, T’Challa’s monarch position is challenged when the supervillain, Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), appears threatening not only his throne and his nation, but also the fate of the world.

The conflict roots from Wakanda’s secret mining of vibranium, a fictional meteoric ore that is both rare and virtually indestructible, as well as the secret past life that Killmonger craves to avenge.

Black Panther is pure perfection all the way from its heart dropping action scenes to its light, humorous dialogue — a combination of film strategy that the MCU is known for. The sets, costumes, customs and language that are heavily infused in the film pay genuine homage to African culture and history.

The cast exudes depth and passion for the characters they play, and in doing so, the audience is able to connect and feel for them. Killmonger, for instance, is not just some power-hungry, blood-thirsty supervillain who strives to rule. He has his own back story — a story in which he is the victim. T’Challa, although a king, is still a boy who just wants to protect his family. What is great about these characters is that they share the same ordinary human problems and emotions with the audience despite their super abilities or power.

The film also features the Dora Milaje which is a team of high-esteemed and skilled female warriors who serves the throne of Wakanda. No female character is sexualized through their costumes, actions or dialogue — a rather persistent problem in the film industry.

The best thing about Black Panther is that it is more than a superhero movie. It’s a representational and personal film that tackles the racism and hardships of the slave trade and human bondage. At the same time, the film does not compromise its plot and still keep its fun and thrilling theme.

Black Panther is not a film centered on slavery, crime, poverty or drug addiction. It breaks the consistent narrative in black films. It opens a path to future films to portray Black Americans and African-Americans as people who are more than the stereotype and more than their history, but rather, as people who can succeed and lead just like anyone else.
