Series provides exciting conflicts
Spoiler Alert: This story may contain plot spoilers for those who watch the show.
The last episode of Shameless, Season 6 left many shameless fans with many unfinished problems and questions. On the finale of Season 6, Frank (William H. Macy) ruined Fiona’s (Emmy Rossum) wedding by exposing her fiancee’s hidden drug problem before the wedding ceremony started. Fiona cancelled the wedding and was last seen outside the church crying. After being expelled from his college, Lip (Jeremy Allen White) accepted his professor’s advice to be taken to rehab for his alcoholic problem.
On the premier of Season 7, Frank was kidnapped by the people from the wedding to drown in a river for what he did in the wedding. Fiona never talks about the wedding and continues her job as the manager at Patsy’s Pies but is faced with difficulty to keep the place running. Lip is released from his A.A treatment and has found ways to manage his alcohol addiction. In this episode, the audience gets a glimpse of the new problems for each character. As manager, Fiona has to keep the restaurant open despite the restaurant’s poor financial situation. Lip needs to find a job that will accept him after getting expelled from MIT. Debbie (Emmy Kenney) has difficulty being a single mother and steals from various shops to earn money.
In “Home Sweet Homeless Shelter,” Fiona gives ultimatums to all the Gallaghers, essentially telling them that she has a future of her own and she does not want to be stuck caring for all her siblings for the rest of her life. Fiona orders her siblings to pay a monthly rent to contribute to the bills of the house or they would have to leave the house if one of the Gallaghers does not pay the rent. Frank replaces his family with a group of homeless people and takes them on a quest to create their own homeless shelter in a house next to the Gallagher kids.
These two main plots of the Gallaghers dealing with new life challenges and Frank devising a plan to take advantage of the homeless makes this season an exciting season to watch on Netflix. Rather than dealing with situations that are inside of the house and among themselves, the Gallaghers deal with external challenges of life.
This season, audiences are able to see that the Gallaghers are more mature than the previous seasons. This season’s plot attempts to test how mature they are to handle new problems. This season is different than others because it focuses solely on each character rather than the family as a whole, with problems concerning how each of the Gallaghers will find ways to achieve a successful feature.
However, this new season falls short on focusing on certain characters such as Carl (Ethan Cutkosky) and Liam (Brendan and Brandon Sims.) After Carl leaves his girlfriend and takes off to join the military, viewers do not hear anything about him and no footage is shown of him. Liam continues to be a side character with little attention and screen time. The only difference about Liam is now that he attends a private school since his old public school is now close.
