Spring is on the verge of beginning, and with that, studios are ramping up their advertising for their upcoming summer blockbusters. Warner Bros. has made the unconventional choice of releasing Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice next week as opposed to a bigger slot next season. This may work in its favor or backfire in some way. But in regards to the summer season, one of the biggest blockbusters on its way is Fox’s continuation of their rebooted X-Men franchise, X-Men: Apocalypse.

Releasing in theaters on May 27 during Memorial Day weekend, this ninth film in the X-Men saga revolves around the rise of the world’s first mutant, Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac). When he plans to destroy the world in order to rebuild it himself, the X-Men must unite to stop him and protect the human race from extinction.

Fighting alongside Apocalypse is the traitorous Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Psylocke (Olivia Munn), Storm (Alexandra Shipp) and Angel (Ben Hardy). Those who have remained faithful to the X-Men are Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Quicksilver (Evan Peters), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) and, of course, Charles Xavier/Professor X (James McAvoy). The two sides will fight for the fate of the earth and it seems to be yet another highlight of this great saga.

This trailer is filled with terrific moments, and not just from a visual standpoint but from a storytelling one as well. Glimpses of Apocalypse’s creation are shown in what appears to be ancient Egypt, which will hopefully provide great backstory to the lore of the character. There also seems to be a lot more of Quicksilver appearing throughout, who was arguably the standout character of X-Men: Days of Future Past.

The action elements all look outstanding as well, especially the one-on-one fights between Psylocke and Nightcrawler as well as Cyclops and Storm. They’re both teased very well and don’t give away too much of how things may wind up. There’s also another spectacular visual of Havok (Lucas Till) releasing his signature red beam of energy out of his chest inside of what appears to be Cerebro, Xavier’s secret chamber.

This film is shaping up to be not only a fantastic comic book movie that will undoubtedly please any hardocre fan, but also a fantastic movie in general that will please even the most casual of filmgoers.
