Spider-Man’s first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Modern trailers for most big-budget movies tend to give away too much of the overall story and ruin some of its most impressive aspects such as huge action sequences or significant plot points. Take the second Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer, which, although didn’t show too much of the highly anticipated fight between the titular heroes, did reveal too much of the story by showing the inclusion of Doomsday towards the end. This is not the case with the latest Captain America: Civil War trailer, which shows just the right amount of footage.

Just under two months away, the third film in the Captain America franchise pits Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) against Captain America (Chris Evans) due to their political differences regarding whether or not the Avengers should operate under heavy government regulation. As the conflict between them heats up, their fellow Avengers must choose whose side they’re on and prepare for, that’s right, civil war.

Joining Iron Man’s side is his longtime friend Rhodey/War Machine (Don Cheadle), Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Vision (Paul Bettany) and a new addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), who will be getting his own solo film in 2018 directed by the man behind Creed, Ryan Coogler. Also on his side is another particular hero who will definitely be discussed further. On Captain America’s side is his childhood friend Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie),  Clint Barton/Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Scott Lang/Ant-Man (Paul Rudd). Heroes will collide, stakes will be raised and potentially one of the best comic book movies ever will be made.

As a trailer, this is essentially flawless. It perfectly establishes its plot and the major conflict and delivers some great visuals without ever showing too much of either. One of the best visuals in particular is that of Ant-Man riding on one of Hawkeye’s arrows and then flying between the fingers of Iron Man’s gauntlet. That’s something that’s straight out of the comics and is surely something that’ll please any hardcore fan.

But now it’s time to discuss what everyone has been buzzing about and that of course is our first glimpse at Marvel’s depiction of the one and only wall-crawler, Spider-Man. After Disney’s deal with Sony, who owned the film rights to Spider-Man, Marvel was in the clear to use the famous web-slinger in their films and it is so satisfying to see how exceptionally his portrayal is. From his terrifically cartoony suit and the dilating eyes on his mask, the film seems to have Spider-Man justice and it’ll undoubtedly be fantastic to see him in action.

There’s nothing to be said about this trailer that isn’t positive. It did exactly what it was supposed to do, which was to build excitement without spoiling anything too significant. All that’s left now is for audiences to pick their side and see how such a massive conflict will be resolved.
