With Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice right around the corner, Warner Brothers has officially begun to craft their DC Cinematic Universe much like Marvel. Their current slate of films includes a Wonder Woman film in summer of 2017, a Flash film in spring of 2018 and an Aquaman film in summer of 2018, but that’s not all. In the fall of 2017 and summer of 2019, the biggest assembly of heroes since the Avengers finally hits theaters in two parts, and that would be none other than the Justice League.

With anticipation rapidly inclining, a major casting decision has just been made that has only amplified fan excitement and for very good reason. Commissioner Gordon, previously played by Gary Oldman in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, has been confirmed to appear in the new Justice League film and the actor that has been cast in the role is none other than the magnificent J.K. Simmons.

J.K. Simmons intimidates his class in Whiplash.

Hot off of his 2015 Oscar win for his phenomenal performance in Whiplash, Simmons has kept busy by starring in a variety of different roles, from blockbuster films like last summer’s flop Terminator: Genisys and smaller ones like this fall’s The Accountant with Ben Affleck. Most recently, he leant his voice to two huge animated films in 2016’s Kung Fu Panda 3 and Zootopia. Now, Simmons, alongside a plethora of other projects, will be returning to blockbuster territory in a role that he will undoubtedly make his own.

This won’t be the actor’s first stab at playing a comic book character, as he played the cigar-chomping J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, effortlessly breathing life into the character and portraying him perfectly on screen. Regardless of how the film will depict Gordon, whether it be more comical or more serious, Simmons has shown that he can nail both acting styles with ease, much like he did with the character of Jameson who was quite over-the-top and cartoony, yet never became irritating. Although Jameson is a considerably sillier character than Commissioner Gordon, Simmons still possesses the stern toughness for the role, as seen in the viciousness of Terence Fletcher, his character from Whiplash. He probably won’t be cursing out the Justice League or throwing chairs at them, but he will bring an incredible human aspect that will surely resonate with the audience among all the superhero craziness.
