Guess the spooky season isn’t over yet! Netflix dropped a new show centered around the dark confidant, and only daughter of the Addams family, Wednesday, partially directed by Tim Burton and created by Miles Millar and Alfred Gough. Burton has made multiple movies dating back to the 80s that kids continue to watch today. This time he has returned with a new rendition of the Addams family starring Jenna Ortega as Wednesday herself.

This 8-episode series begins with Wednesday being expelled from her latest school, causing her to be sent to Nevermore to continue the Addams family legacy. Nevermore is known to be a safe school for outcasts like vampires and werewolves away from the “normies.” Originally planning to keep her stay short, Wednesday witnesses a murder of a student which allows her to be more intrigued by what goes on at that school, pushing her to be invested in this ongoing mystery and the show begins. Wednesday immediately became a  very successful show, reaching the top ranking on Netflix within one week of its release, and it is still gaining popularity all around social media.

Jenna Ortega, the actress who plays Wednesday Addams, was in various movies and TV shows from  Stuck in the Middle in 2016, to the movie X in 2022. Her acting in multiple films and TV shows has made her gain more popularity over the past years. In addition to her outstanding acting performance, Ortega also choreographed a dance for her character Wednesday to the song “Goo Goo Muck” by the Cramps. She was inspired by the dance that goth teens performed in the 80s at the dance clubs.

Wednesday has gained popularity on social media, specifically on TikTok with fashion and dance trends, video edits, and memes being created by thousands of users. Teenagers found inspiration from Wednesday’s modern fashion sense with her black and white clothing, causing them to create their own outfits to show their followers what they would wear if they were in the show. Along with fashion, users on TikTok really enjoyed watching the dance that Ortega choreographed, and have tried mimicking it or made video edits with that dance and replaced the original song with the song “Bloody Mary” by Lady Gaga.

The Addams family has gained popularity over the past years, not just because of their multiple features in different movies and TV shows, but because of how abnormal they are from other families. The Addams family has a very dark aura. They are immune to dangerous things such as electricity and fire and are unconcerned about how other people perceive them as frightening or bizarre. Wednesday has continued to portray the family by keeping the same characteristics that were shown in past movies and TV shows. This show allows the Addams family to live on and for new generations to be exposed to the Addams family legacy.
