Head coach of USC is fired

After a treacherous start for the storied USC Football program, head coach Lane Kiffin was abruptly fired on Sunday morning.

Only six hours after a blowout loss against the Arizona Wildcats, USC personnel took action. Athletic Director Pat Haden made a decision many would have decided months ago. “This guy should’ve been long gone last season, when the Trojans had a terrible record,” said junior Matt Mirbasoo.

During Kiffin’s term as head coach, the Trojans went 2–3 this season and 7–6 last season. Many Kiffin supporters, though, argued that the only reason the Trojans were having a losing season this year is because of the NCAA’s revokement of their scholarships. “Kiffin was a good coach, I mean what coach could be successful when they don’t have enough scholarships to entice players,” said junior Christine Gaspariam. “I don’t understand what USC fans and Pat Haden expect from him.”

Now that Kiffin has been fired, the search for a new head coach has begun. But until Haden makes his decision, he has Ed Orgeron as interim head coach. Orgeron was Kiffin’s assistant coach and the former head coach of Mississippi.

Many names have emerged, such as Broncos Defensive Coordinator Jack del Rio, or even Steve Sarkisian, current head coach of Washington University. Haden now has two weeks to decide on his hiring before the next USC game. The fate of the Trojans is in Haden’s hand.

“I think the guys on this team that really do care and can turn this thing around,” USC quarterback Cody Kessler said Saturday night, in an interview on ESPN. “It’s going to be hard — I’m not going to lie — but with the character and leadership that we have we can do it.”
